The rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies present both opportunities and challenges for societies worldwide. As we navigate the integration of AI into various contexts, it is crucial to ensure that these technologies are guided by principles that prioritize women, gender-diverse and LGBTQIA+ rights. I decided to take this approach in this specific topic and not another from the ones that have been discussed on the Global Digital Compact because there’s evidence on how new technologies such as Generative AI, Content moderation tools, Facial recognition tools, CV evaluations made by AI, and similar effect and increase discrimination and marginalization of these communities, women, gender-diverse people and LGBTQIA+ community for several reasons related to biases on the data, or the design, development or deployment of these technologies.

I believe that in order to get practical measures to align AI applications with these principles, foster collaboration between regulators and innovators to safeguard human right, can be achieved only by proposing strategies to ensure the promotion of sustainable development goals through AI and other emerging technologies.

1. Moving from Principles to Practical Measures:

To guide the application of AI technologies while upholding woman, gender-diverse people and LGBTQIA+ rights, it is essential to establish robust frameworks that incorporate these perspectives. This requires a multi-stakeholder approach involving governments, civil society organizations, AI developers, and impacted communities. Some practical measures could include:

  1. Encouraging diverse teams of developers and researchers to ensure a broad range of perspectives and avoid biases in AI algorithms. Incorporating woman, gender-diverse and LGBTQIA+ expertise into the design, development and deployment processes can help to identify potential biases and rectify discriminatory outcomes.
  2. Implementing mechanisms to understand how AI systems arrive at their decisions, that means making the processes explainable and accountable. This transparency allows for auditing and mitigation of biases, safeguarding against discriminatory outcomes.
  3. Ensure regularly assessing the impact of AI systems on women, gender-diverse people and LGBTQIA+ rights and making necessary adjustments to mitigate any negative consequences. For these is essential collaboration with human rights organizations and impacted communities whose can provide valuable insights.

2. Collaboration between Regulators and Innovators:

Promoting the design, development and deployment of emerging technologies while protecting human rights requires collaboration between regulators and innovators, this mean:

  1. Work closely to establish ethical guidelines and standards that explicitly address women, gender-diverse people and LGBTQIA+ rights. These guidelines should emphasize the importance of things such as non-discrimination, privacy, and consent in all stages of promotion of these emerging technologies. One possible action related to this point are the regulatory sandboxes where experimentation with policies can allow Innovators to create a safe environment that can achieve the integrity of woman, gender-diverse people and LGBTQIA+ rights.
  2. Create some rigorous impact assessments before deploying AI technologies. These assessments should consider potential risks and evaluate the impact on women, gender-diverse and LGBTQIA+ communities.
  3. Engaging with diverse stakeholders, including Women, gender-diverse, and LGBTQIA+ rights advocates, during the policy development process. With the objective to ensure that the policies actually reflect the needs and concerns of these communities.

3. Promoting Sustainable Development Goals through AI:

AI and other emerging technologies have the potential to contribute significantly to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To ensure their positive impact, we consider that the following measures can be taken:

  1. Identifying specific areas where AI can address challenges related to the SDG on gender equality in procure of no increasing harms or negative impacts on women, gender-diverse people and the LGBTQIA+ community this means aligns AI development with this goal in order to amplify their benefits.
  2. Ensuring that AI technologies are accessible and affordable to all. Bridging the digital divide and reducing gender and LGBTQIA+ disparities in access to technology is crucial for sustainable development and a guarantee for people knowledge and gain that allows the to do some auditing mechanisms to these technologies.
  3. Leveraging AI to improve data collection, analysis, and monitoring systems to inform evidence-based policymaking. Collecting disaggregated data based on gender and sexual orientation can help identify and address inequalities effectively. This must be make with all the safety and privacy measures possible such as anonymize any thread that could lead to an individual identification and rights violations related to be a woman, a gender-diverse person or part of the LGBTQIA+ community.
  4. Investing in training programs to build AI literacy among women, gender-diverse people and LGBTQIA+ groups. This will help to empower these communities with the skills to participate in the AI-driven economy and fosters inclusivity to reduce disparities.

In conclusion, the successful integration of AI technologies requires a comprehensive approach that aligns with principles of human diversity and sustainable development. By implementing practical measures to incorporate these perspectives, fostering collaboration between regulators and innovators, and ensuring that AI advancements contribute to the achievement of the SDGs, especially gender equality, we can harness the full potential of AI while safeguarding human rights and promoting inclusive and sustainable development within a gender and LGBTQIA+ perspectives in hand.
